MCC’s nationally recognized Pottery program is known for its state-of-the-art facility, accomplished alumni, and talented staff. The program is offered through Continuing Education, which allows all the skills taught in the degree program, but students can take courses convenient for them! Classes are offered each semester and minimester classes can be scheduled at students’ requests. Take this opportunity to learn about clay from working potters that are actively involved in the local community.

Course Information
Beginner Handbuilding Pottery
Beginner Handbuilding Pottery is designed to teach adult students the foundational skills and techniques required to make exquisite handbuilt work. Techniques used in the course include: pinch, coil, and slab. Instructor Erin Younge guides students through each step of the process, no experience required!
Studio Pottery
Studio Pottery is unlimited while being instructed by multiple instructors. No is experience required, but it is a mixed class. Beginners will work alongside intermediate and advanced students, learning from each other as they go. Students will gain hands-on experience in hand-building and wheel throwing, mixing clay, loading kilns, along with glazing their work. We encourage both hobbyists and aspiring potters and cater courses to each student at their level of interest. Each course is taught by experienced local potters. Current instructors are Sydney Williams, Anne Raven Jorgensen, Erin Younge, and Jared Zehmer.
Studio Schedule
Monday: Beginner Handbuilding Pottery, 6 p.m. – 9 p.m.
Tuesday: Studio Pottery, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Wednesday: Studio Pottery, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. and Studio Pottery, 6 p.m. – 9 p.m.
Thursday: Studio Pottery, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Friday: Studio Pottery, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Additional Information
Each course provides cone 6 and cone 10 clay, equipment, some tools, all slips, glazes, and glaze materials that are necessary to produce quality work.
To supplement material costs and counteract the low tuition fees, students are charged a small fee per pound of finished work. Rates will be explained at the start of each class.
Requirements
ALL students need to bring the following items to each class session:
- A towel
- An apron
- A notebook
- A tool kit (can be bought at StarWork or Michael’s)
